He just said he wanted Brooklyn MCs, so we had a screening of the movie and we had Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Masta Ace, Special Ed, Buckshot, a couple of other ones. We was watching the movie and ODB got up after ten minutes and was like, ‘Man, ain’t nobody getting shot in this movie!’ and walked out. So it was the MCs that was left that got on the record.”

On Wednesday night, Red Bull Music Academy put together one of the coolest shows I’d ever seen. Actually, it was more of an experience than a show or performance because it allowed us to take a peek into this other world, of musicians applying their talents at the highest and riskiest level. We got to see and hear them explore the improvised round robin duet form. We got to see them acquaint themselves with their temporary partners. Ultimately, we got to see them hold dialogue and create music in its purest form — no charts, no orchestration. There were so many great moments: Andrew Bird trading melody and syncopation with Joe Lovano. Dosh tuning his effects to find the perfect accompaniment to Julia Holter’s amazing voice. Anytime Robert Glasper touched a keyboard. But for me, the highlight of the eventing was seeing Andrew W.K. — the showman of showmen — willingly take a backseat to the great Bernie Worrell. That’s love.

I got a call from Miles Leonard (President of Parlophone EMI Virgin) to talk about a project of Blur’s Damon Albarn. It was called Gorillaz. Not a band as such, more of a collective of collaborators. They had inadvertently caught some heat, by way of a 2-Step Garage Remix of “Clint Eastwood”. BBC Radio 1 weren’t giving the original a lot of spins and decided (to keep in with its core audience) to do a radio edit of this popular dance mix. Since this version wasn’t representative of what Gorillaz were about, EMI & Albarn initially weren’t keen but relented to public demand. I was given a copy of all their demo’s and finished tracks for what was to be their debut album. The brief was “pick one that you can produce, remix or whatever into a hit single”. There wasn’t anything immediately popping out at me and, after voicing this things went quiet. In reality, the silence was largely due to my proposed budget - i.e. my production fee & recording/mixing costs. I then got a call a few weeks later saying “Jamie Howlett has already started working on a video for the song “19-2000” - we’d really love it if you took that song and made into a hit”. To my ears, it was a ropey durgy old demo lacking a great melody, let alone a big hook. After striking a deal with Miles, I agreed to do it. The fee wasn’t what I wanted but he said “I promise I will make it up to you on another record”. He never did! As far as creativity was concerned, his exact words were “you have carte blanche to whatever you want”. What happened next was nightmare-ish 10 days…. [MORE TO FOLLOW]
